Teeth and Alzheimer’s

Here is a Next Big Idea Club excerpt from the new book by Bill Schutt called “BITE: An Incisive History of Teeth from Hagfish to Humans”

“Scientists are exploring the connection between the presence of a common tooth and gum-related bacterium and the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease.

The thought here is that the bacteria invade the brain, where they release chemicals called gingipains—an enzyme that breaks down proteins. Some researchers believe that gingipains are also involved in the production of amyloid plaques—the hard clumps of misfolded protein that accumulate in the brain, disrupting its function in Alzheimer’s patients”
