Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every industry—from education and healthcare to finance and urban planning. But alongside its promise come serious challenges: algorithmic bias, lack of explainability, accuracy concerns, privacy risks, inefficiencies, limited practicality, adverse environmental impact, and regulatory uncertainty.

To meet these challenges, AI needs more than just cutting-edge code. It needs wisdom. And one of the most overlooked sources of it is retired professionals, also known as the wisdom generation (WisGen).

With decades of experience across fields like law, medicine, education, engineering, public policy, and ethics, WisGen bring essential real-world judgment, contextual understanding, and deep domain expertise. Their insight is exactly what’s needed to shape AI that is not only powerful, but responsible, human-centred, and trusted.

Yes, AI can hallucinate, and it absolutely needs boundaries to be set—especially in high-stakes or sensitive contexts. In large language models, “hallucination” refers to the confident generation of false, misleading, or entirely fabricated information. An AI might invent a quote, provide inaccurate statistics, or fabricate non-existent legal or medical advice. This erodes user trust—particularly in fields where precision is non-negotiable.

In law, the case of Mata v. Avianca revealed that ChatGPT had fabricated legal citations and quotes, leading to flawed legal research and disciplinary action (Stack, 2023).
In science, Google’s chatbot Bard falsely claimed that the James Webb Space Telescope captured the first image of an exoplanet—a claim directly contradicted by NASA’s records (Vincent, 2023).

These aren’t cases of intentional deception—they’re side effects of how language models function. AI doesn’t “know” facts; it predicts language based on patterns in its training data. When that data is inconsistent or a prompt is vague, hallucinations are more likely. To mitigate these risks, experts emphasize the need for clear boundaries—such as explicit instructions, rigorous validation mechanisms, safety filters, and tight domain constraints. Here, the WisGen may be uniquely qualified to help.

Another powerful example of how AI can support knowledge transfer is McKinsey’s internal tool, Lilli (Evolving AI, 2023). By synthesizing a century’s worth of historical documents and expert interviews, Lilli enables consultants to access critical insights, identify experts, and generate concise, actionable summaries—allowing them to focus on high-value, strategic work. This approach highlights how AI can complement mentorship by facilitating the efficient transfer of knowledge.

Companies looking to adopt a similar model can:

Begin digitizing and curating their institutional knowledge by interviewing their previous and current senior employees and documenting their experiences.
Then start pairing AI tools with mentorship programs to enhance the learning process. For instance, WisGen could collaborate with AI to offer personalized guidance, ensuring that valuable expertise is passed down effectively.

Finally, in digital literacy, retired educators and technically proficient seniors are bridging generational divides. Through community workshops, mentoring programs, and partnerships with organizations like AARP and TechSoup, they help demystify AI for older adults—empowering their peers to engage with emerging technologies rather than fear them (Dono, 2021; TechSoup, 2016).

Whether it’s shaping green tech, guiding regulation, or bridging the digital divide, retirees continue to play a powerful role in making AI more inclusive, usable, ethical and sustainable.

Implementation Frameworks: Turning Insight into Integration

For organizations seeking to tap into WisGen expertise, having structured models can make engagement both effective and repeatable. A WisGen Inclusion Framework could include:

Partnering with alumni associations, senior citizen professional networks, or retirement-focused organizations (e.g., AARP, SeniorNet, Encore.org).
Creating interdisciplinary advisory boards that include both tech experts and retired professionals with domain-specific experience.
Offering flexible roles such as part-time fellowships, consulting arrangements, or volunteer opportunities that recognize the diverse motivations of retirees.
Normalizing intergenerational collaboration within AI teams and institutions through formal integration processes.

On the other hand, while many retirees are already digitally proficient, it’s important to recognize that others may need support navigating modern AI tools and platforms. Upskilling initiatives—such as AI-literacy bootcamps, interactive workshops, or peer-led learning groups—can empower more WisGen members to contribute meaningfully. Organizations can also accelerate inclusion by developing onboarding materials tailored to non-technical professionals, helping bridge the initial familiarity gap with emerging AI systems and terminology.

To reinforce the case for investing in WisGen participation, organizations should also prioritize data and measurement. Empirical evidence strengthens the case for policy and practice. Key metrics to track might include:

Bias reduction outcomes before and after WisGen engagement in design or dataset reviews.
Improvements in explainability and user trust, as measured through usability testing or stakeholder feedback.
ROI metrics for mentorship programs, such as time-to-productivity for junior developers, decreased error rates, or improved deployment outcomes.

Publishing these findings can not only build internal momentum but also encourage broader adoption of WisGen collaboration across industries.

AI is only as ethical, fair, and effective as the humans guiding it. And in this era of rapid advancement, what the field needs most isn’t more innovation—it’s more wisdom.
