About Anju V Sharma

"I am convent educated from Calcutta with a vast experience of 30 years in the education field and ex-principal of reputed schools and am now imparting IELTS and Spoken English via online classes.

As a school Principal, my journey has been fuelled by a deep passion for education and a commitment to nurturing the talents and abilities of both students and staff. Leadership and mentorship are at the core of my professional philosophy, and they shape every aspect of my work.

My personal interests, such as gardening and community service, have significantly influenced my approach to teaching slum children. Gardening, for instance, is not just a hobby but a metaphor for growth and nurturing potential. Introducing gardening projects in schools can teach children about responsibility, teamwork, and sustainability, while also providing therapeutic benefits.

Teaching children from slum areas is both a significant challenge and a profound opportunity. As a school principal, my commitment to leadership and mentorship is driven by a deep passion for social work and a belief in the transformative power of education. By integrating compassionate leadership, effective mentorship, and personal passions into our educational practices, we can create an environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive. This journey requires dedication, empathy, and a relentless pursuit of equity, but the rewards—measured in the lives transformed—are immeasurable."

Looking back, what would you tell your younger self about preparing for retirement?

"Start your retirement planning early. Starting early is crucial because it allows your money to grow through compound interest. Explore retirement savings options like employer-sponsored plans (e.g., 401(k)) or individual retirement accounts (IRAs). Set clear goals, create a budget that includes regular savings, and seek advice from financial professionals. Balancing current spending with long-term savings ensures a comfortable retirement."

What are you passionate about, and how do you spend your time now?

"Cooking has become my passion, consuming much of my time with its creative joys and the satisfaction of sharing delicious meals. I constantly work on refining my culinary skills through experimenting with diverse recipes and learning from experts. I also focus on healthy cooking, incorporating nutritious ingredients and exploring new cooking methods that promote well-being.

Integrating my love for gardening, I grow herbs and vegetables that add freshness and flavour to my dishes, embodying a farm-to-table approach. Sharing my culinary creations with others brings me immense joy, whether through hosting dinner parties, sharing recipes on my blog, or volunteering to cook for local charities. Cooking has not only become a passion but a fulfilling journey of exploration and creativity."

On her experience with WisdomCircle

The Impact of Meaningful Advice

We asked our WisGen, people who are retiring or are retired and are seeking out ways of staying engaged, “What is a piece of advice you have received or read that has impacted you and changed the way you think about or view life?

To share your articles, blogs, and other written content related to your post-retirement experience, write to us at content@wisdomcircle.com

WisdomCircle honours those challenging cultural expectations of elders slowing down and retreating into retirement by shining light on their journey through an inspiring series called “Wisdom Stories”.

Mr Sonny Iqbal, in our interview with him, says, "A lesson I hold closely to is  “No one pigeonholes us better into limiting roles than we do ourselves. We operate in comfortable patterns of thoughts and actions that exist from our past”. We define an identity and wish to stay within the comfort of that. I could have stayed a hotelier had I not challenged myself to “break away and not pigeonhole myself in the comfort and success of that world”.

I have succeeded in staying relevant to my work and my family by doing new things every 4-5 years. I love my work and am proud that it is a far cry from the work I did a few years ago which was also different to the work I did a few years before that. And more importantly, others tell me that they have seen me evolving, which is most gratifying."
