About Col. Vimal Kumar

I am 59 year old and retired from the Indian Army about a year back. I have had a very humble background and am son of a naval veteran who laid down his life for the nation during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. I was never a brilliant student but I always had a sincere, dedicated and honest way of doing any task or duty coming my way. As a youngster, at some stage, I became passionate about donning the uniform of the defence forces and I consider myself to be privileged to have served the nation for three and half decades.

My interests and hobbies are varied from watching cricket, staying abreast with news, all types of sports, music, some amount of social media, travelling etc.

Looking back, what would you tell your younger self about preparing for retirement?

"The only thing I actually planned and implemented  for retirement was procuring a big easy chair for relaxing and reading newspapers. With hindsight I would have advised myself to get trained and be more tech savvy in handling things like mails, documents, spreadsheets etc."

What are you passionate about, and how do you spend your time now?

"My passions remain the same as nothing has changed for me post retirement. I  am still  regular with my evening walks and my small physical exercise regime on a daily basis. A good mix of movies, watching cricket  and other sports, keeping abreast with news, travelling, music and spending quality time with family keeps me gainfully occupied."

On her experience with WisdomCircle

"What I liked most about WisdomCircle was the no nonsense approach or rather the to the point approach to deal with people. Whatever little interactions I had with representatives of WisdomCircle they were always polite, respectful, humane and very systematic in their dealings. My compliments to the team of professionals of WisdomCircle.

I am presently working part time with a startup called Ground Screw Company. The present employment has been a great learning so far and I intend to build on this and be a small contributor to the future success of this new path breaking startup."

Fearless after 50: how women over 50 are taking on the world

Shoba Narayan writes, “India has among the lowest participation of women in the workforce. Every time I heard a woman say the above lines, I would think to myself—was it their lived experience or just excuses? Why aren’t more Indian women going out to work in spite of being highly qualified?”

However, she notes a recent and positive shift among women in their fifties. These women are blossoming in ways even they might not have predicted.

In her latest blog, Narayan explores this phenomenon through interviews and conversations with women over 50 who are challenging societal norms by choosing work that suits their needs and interests.

Gautam Mukerjee in his interview with Saonli Bedi of WisdomCircle says,

A lesson I would like to share is never to stop evolving. I invest in continuous reading, upskilling my knowledge and staying in touch with cutting-edge field research. My entrepreneurial experience encompassed dealing with unions, employees, distributors/dealers, government, bankers, press, global technical collaborators, international customers, politicians, legal entities and international regulators. The combination of academic rigour and hands-on entrepreneurial experience has given me a big advantage over others. It is for this reason that my classes have been received well, at reputed institutions like IIM Kolkata, XLRI, IICM, MTI-SAIL etc…

Today, I am in the midst of all that I love doing. I am teaching forward-looking theories in management that will appear in textbooks in 3-5 years. I am trying to master golf with my caddy, who hasn’t studied beyond school, but shares wonderful tips on Mindfulness with me! I am consuming high-quality content on topics I have a passion for – movies, documentaries, sports events and music. I would love the day to have 48 hours, as I have so much ground to cover!

Staying engaged literally forces you to ‘Live in the Present’ which is the best way to live!
