Cultural expectations surrounding the elderly are being challenged today, and with good reason!
While it was the norm to slow down and retreat into a quieter life post-retirement, more men and women are finding purpose and joy in doing the opposite.
WisdomCircle honours such men and women by shining light on their journey through an inspiring series called “Wisdom Stories”. These people have successfully smashed stereotypes, and their stories remind us that life should be lived to the fullest, no matter what age or stage.
I was born and brought up in Chennai, and today own a restaurant called “Bhangra”, that serves authentic Punjabi food in Chennai. I love running my restaurant and will continue to serve the food I love, for as long as I can.
There have been many failures in my journey, but each setback made me into what I am today. If I could go back in time and change anything, I would spend more time with my parents. I was a young man in a rush, who missed the opportunity to cherish time with my parents. I have been deeply influenced by my parents and my wife Mala, because they stood by me and believed in me, even in times when I was filled with self-doubt.
An important skill I have learnt from my varied business experiences is not to react. Everything we experience does not warrant a reaction from us. Complex issues have solutions, and we need to still the mind and use silence as our biggest ally, to help us get there.
A turning point in my life was when I turned 45 years old. I decided then that I was not keen to retire—an excellent decision in hindsight. What keeps me motivated today, is to seize the day, one day at a time. I wake up every morning charged with positive energy. I know that I will have a super day if I am active, alert and filled with positive intent. If I become lazy and idle, I will become old very quickly.
My message to the Wisdom Generation is to keep yourself meaningfully occupied, both physically and mentally, and challenge yourself because you can do anything if you believe in yourself.
