Wisdom Stories Ep.63 - Sandeep Banati

Cultural expectations surrounding the elderly are being challenged today, and with good reason!

While it was the norm to slow down and retreat into a quieter life post-retirement, more men and women are finding purpose and joy in doing the opposite.

WisdomCircle honours such men and women by shining light on their journey through an inspiring series called “Wisdom Stories”. These people have successfully smashed stereotypes, and their stories remind us that life should be lived to the fullest, no matter what age or stage.

A turning point in my career was when I joined Egon Zehnder, my current employer in 1996. In this rewarding journey, I had strong mentors along the way who changed my perspective on my career and inspired me to aim higher. I officially retired in 2022 but extended my stay as I was given the option.  Leading challenging tasks successfully in this role gives a lot of satisfaction.

Before I joined Egon Zehnder, I went through the unfortunate experience of losing a job, which was devastating. But there was a lot of motivation from my family which made me bounce back. My family is my anchor, and I feel fortunate to have my wife Mini, and my lovely daughters Nikita and Mallika in my corner. One needs to adapt to changes if one wants to stay relevant both professionally and personally.

As a finance personnel, it was important to build my domain expertise. I focussed on understanding and learning varied aspects of financial reporting, audit, tax, compliance, forecasting and accounting. At times I worked under significant pressure on time and resources, but I was always motivated to show up and contribute.  A lesson I would share with you is to embrace networking to build relationships with colleagues, mentors and professionals, as that can open doors for opportunities and impact career growth.

It is important to stay engaged after retirement, perhaps professionally in a contract role like me or explore other interests alongside work that can help in maintaining work-life balance. I feel valued by my colleagues who tap into my experience. Keeping in touch with them keeps me updated, and interactions with younger colleagues are invigorating. The journey does not end at retirement, as this is an opportunity to redefine your career whether in consulting or part-time jobs. There can be many opportunities, and you must choose the right one for yourself.
Stay inquisitive, adapt to changes and connect with like-minded people who can help you in achieving this. Enjoy this exhilarating transition.
