Wisdom Stories Ep.65: Mukta Singh

Wisdom Stories Ep.65 - Mukta Singh

Cultural expectations surrounding the elderly are being challenged today, and with good reason!

While it was the norm to slow down and retreat into a quieter life post-retirement, more men and women are finding purpose and joy in doing the opposite.

WisdomCircle honours such men and women by shining light on their journey through an inspiring series called “Wisdom Stories”. These people have successfully smashed stereotypes, and their stories remind us that life should be lived to the fullest, no matter what age or stage.

I grew up all over Rajasthan, as my father was a civil servant of the state. I spent significant time in Ajmer at Sophia School and College, for my high school and college education. While pursuing my Master’s degree, I met my husband and got married while I was very young.

My husband was mostly away from home, as he was a fighter pilot in the Air Force, and later became a commercial pilot. I had my hands full with home and the responsibilities of two little children. Once they were more independent, it gave me the time and space to explore my passion for art. I love international music of the 1970s and 80s, and I started with painting portraits of my musical heroes like Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan and others, before moving on to other themes.

My daughter created my Instagram account to share my art. This was a turning point as I connected with many people across geographies and age groups. Shriram School of Commerce invited me as a result. An architect from Jaipur hosted my art in his house and invited a rock band to inaugurate the exhibition. I enjoyed engaging with people and receiving wonderful feedback on my artistic style. I was encouraged to continue this path and felt that life hadn’t passed me by. I had a lot to look forward to.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I got busy with her caregiving. It did not leave me with much time, and I stopped colouring my hair. She wasn’t very happy to see me turn grey. I made a promise to her before she left us, that I would carry my grey hair well, by taking care of myself.

In the lockdown, my daughter and I used our spare time to explore fashion and post pictures on Instagram. Women resonated with these posts, and it made me feel good about my age. I started getting modelling offers soon after and began my journey as a silver-haired model. My modelling journey caught the attention of the media and was covered by Better India, Humans of Bombay and other magazines. I did a shoot for Harpers Bazaars and walked the ramp a couple of times. I feel happy to be a part of a cohort that is redefining beauty standards.

Ageing is a natural phenomenon, and it is not unattractive. It falls on us to be role models and show the younger generation how it is done! We can keep ourselves meaningfully engaged while taking good care of ourselves at any age.
